Encore is designed as a shared weekend experience. The rehearsals, meals, and time spent together are all part of what makes the weekend meaningful, both musically and communally. Because of this, we ask singers to commit to the full schedule and plan to be present for the entire weekend.

Before the Encore weekend, singers are invited to take part in Before the Downbeat, an optional three-session lead-in class designed to help you step into the weekend feeling confident, prepared, and connected to the music and community.

Across three two-hour classes, Artistic Director Kirsten Oberoi guides singers through this year’s repertoire while offering space to ask individual questions, explore foundational vocal technique, and build comfort with music reading in a supportive, low-pressure setting. These sessions allow time to slow down, listen closely, and get to know both the music and the process before the full ensemble comes together.

Before the Downbeat is especially supportive for singers who are new to structured choral singing, while still offering depth and clarity for experienced singers who appreciate extra time with the music.

Participation is optional, and singers may register for Encore with or without these sessions.

Encore repertoire is thoughtfully chosen to be expressive, meaningful, and musically satisfying. Music may span a variety of styles and traditions, with a focus on pieces that invite connection, depth, and shared artistry.

In keeping with SSCC’s modern approach, rehearsals also explore visual expression and creative performance techniques, helping singers connect more fully to the music and communicate its meaning beyond the notes on the page. The result is a performance that feels alive, intentional, and deeply shared.
